Gastric Bypass Surgery is recommended to patients who suffer from clinically severe obesity, a condition that affects about 6 million Americans (American Obesity Association, 2005). These patients often respond poorly, if at all, to conventional diets and exercise regimes. Such patients often experience overwhelming medical and psychological problems due to their condition.

The proposal for weight loss surgery is generally limited to only those people who have a BMI over 40, or a BMI of 35 or higher and suffer from serious medical problems (hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and/or joint problems) that are made worse by obesity, have been unable to reduce weight or maintain weight under a medically supervised program, have been obese for at least 5 years, have no history of alcohol abuse and do not have depression or other major emotional disorder.
