This article refers to a criminal case where the parents of 2 year old Riley Ann Sawyer beat her up with a belt, threw her across the room where her skull cracked on the tiled floor and she died. The parents proceeded to throw her body into the Galveston Bay in a suitcase which was found later.

Kimberly Dawn Trenor, the mother has been convicted with a life sentence without parole. Her husband Royce Clyde Zeigler II has also been charged with capital murder but a sentence is due and he remains jailed.

The crime comes under Texas Penal Code Title 5 (Offenses against the person), Chapter 19 (Criminal Homicide), section 3 (Capital Murder) part a. Part a reads as follows:

CAPITAL MURDER.  (a)  A person commits an offense if the person commits murder as defined under Section 19.02(b)(1). Section 19.02(b)(1) is: (b)  A person commits an offense if he: (1)  intentionally or knowingly causes the death of an individual (Texas Penal Code).
