In 1992, the General Accounting Office reported that the Authorities charged with testing and ensuring safety of meat for consumption only tested 4 out of the 82 drugs used on farm animals raising questions on the effectiveness of the procedures and the extent to which consumer welfare is safeguarded (New York Times, A20).

Today, scientists, researchers and other institutions are working tirelessly to produce concrete proof on dangers and health risks posed by the consumption of this kind of meat, especially cancer, in addition to the already established ailments, disorders and negative impacts to the environment. The fact, however, is that we cannot sit around and assume the dangers. The problem needs to be solved and the government, industry players and the consumers all have a role to play in ensuring the meat consumed in America is free of contamination by drugs, hormones and other chemicals.
