In the start of the tale, the shadow is the learned man’s servant, compelled to copy all his moves. Later it manages to escape from the man’s control eventually becoming strong enough to pass for a human. The shadow constantly seeks to increase its own status and lower down the status of its master; eventually, the master is degraded to the point of agreeing to pretend to be his shadow. In the end, the shadow wants its former master to become its permanent shadow and to kneel before it in the manner of shadows, but this is too much degradation for the learned man to bear and he refuses to comply and threatens to expose the shadow for what it is. The show then has the man killed.
