Avian Influenza a subtype of Influenza A is a virus that occurs naturally among wild birds worldwide in their intestines. The wild birds act as carriers for the virus. It is extremely contagious among domesticated birds including chickens, ducks and turkeys. ²

The virus is transmitted through bodily secretions. Domesticated birds can be infected with the virus through direct contact with infected waterfowl or other infected poultry or through contact with surfaces or materials that have been contaminated by the virus. ²

Like the H5N1 the H1N1 is a subspecies of the Influenza A virus. Both these viruses have mutated into different strains which can infect pigs and birds. Both viruses are transmitted through bodily secretions. Domesticated birds can be infected with them through direct contact with other infected poultry or through contact with surfaces or materials that have been contaminated by the virus.  The both have a low virulence type, although the H5N1 also has a highly pathogenic version that spreads rapidly through groups of poultry and can kill them within 48 hours. ²
