Marriage is commonly assumed to be the union between a man and a woman but a new dilemma is introduced with the concept of gay marriages. Although most people are tolerant towards homosexuality there is still some opposition when it comes to gay marriage. The government should not have a right to intervene in the pursuit of happiness of any two people on the way to the altar because of their sexual orientation.
Gay couples display values that are not distinguishable from their straight neighbors. They contribute to the community by helping to volunteer in charities and work on school boards. They love their family and contribute time to them and not only do they try to make their life better but also of their neighbors. Gay relationships are based on love and affection rather than sex. Sex in a gay relationship displays another way of expressing love just as it does for straight couples. Being gay has a lot more to do with a person’s essence of who they are; it’s like their core identity. It is a lot deeper than a sexual relationship between a couple. (Bidstrup 2004)
Mahatma Gandhi was a strong believer of non-violence and opined that anything that is free of violence is a good thing. Any human being is capable of violence whether gay or straight and marriage is a union of love and happiness between two people. If “Murderers, convicted felons of all sorts, even known child molesters are all allowed to freely marry and procreate, and do so every day, with hardly a second thought,” then why are homosexuals looked down upon when they do the same thing. (Bidstrup 2004) As long as two people do not come in harm way or put anyone else in harm way they should be allowed to enter in a union of marriage regardless of their gender similarities.
