Sample Essay

A platoon has been fired and an old man lies dead and this makes Dave Jensen make a lot of fun about the man since his hand is chopped off. Jensen encourages O’Brien to do just as he has done in efforts to “show a little respect for your elders” (O’Brien 255) but since O’Brien is thinking of Linda, his date; he declines to do as Jensen advices.

At this point, we learn that Linda was O’Brien’s love in 1956 when she was at the age of nine years however; she was suffering from brain cancer and thus had to wear a red cap to hide her balding head. Although she is already dead and buried, the love and respect O’Brien has for her prevents him from mocking dead people. He finds comfort in the love they shared and thus has to feel some love for the dead and thus feel pity for them. O’Brien says, “[S]ometimes I can even see Timmy skating with Linda under the yellow floodlights. I’m young and happy. I’ll never die. —– I realize it is as Tim trying to save Timmy’s life with a story” (O’Brien 259). This is a proof that he gets comfort in the memories he has on Linda.
