Many of today’s businesses and domestic user connect to the Internet with the help of Asymmetric DSL (ADSL). ADSL divides the total bandwidth available for data transmission based on the assumption that most of the user of the Internet receive or download a much larger amount of data then they send or upload. Hence, if the bandwidth is divided such that the frequency bandwidth available for download traffic is about three to four time that of upload, and then the user will be able to get the maximum advantage of a DSL connection (Golden, Dedieu and Jackobsen).

It is also important to mention here that the precise amount of benefit that a user will receive from an ADSL connection greatly depends upon the distance of the user from the central office of the company which is providing the ADSL service, or exchange. This is because of the fact the ADSL is sensitive to distance technology and the quality of its signals decreases as the length of the circuit from the exchange to the user increases. Hence the customers, living a large distance away from an exchange will get a much lower speed than those who live near it. The maximum distance that an ADSL connection can support is about 5.5Kms, however, many ADSL service providers cap the distance to a much lower limit due to service quality and speed reasons. An ADSL connection can provide a maximum download speed of up to 8Mbps at a distance of about 1.8Kms while the maximum upload speed for this distance is about 640Kbps. Technological advancement in technology has led to the further development of the ADSL standard, hence the newer versions called ADSL2 and ADSL2+ can support download speeds of 12Mbps and 24Mbps while the upstream capacity has been increased to 1Mbps and 3Mbps respectively (Vermillion).
