Sample Essay

This essay is on architecture of data warehouse.

Though simplistic when they arrived in the market, Data warehouse have constantly evolved now into more complex architecture. This architecture consist of several layers and components which are describes in the lines below.

External Database Layer

This is one of the sources of a data warehouse. An operational system is one which processes the data to support critical information needs through process of a small groups of well-defined data transactions. But these systems are limited in focus and do not permit easy access to data. The data in these databases are also limited. Therefore, organizations that acquire additional data to support and enhance their business operations use external database layer to store it.

Information Access Layer

Thee information Access layer of a data warehouse interacts with the end-users directly. This layer is usually represented by the tools that end-users normally use to view and manipulate data such as Web browsers, MS Access and MS Excel. It also include the software as well as the hardware that is involved in the display and printing of reports, chars and spreadsheets that are part of the analysis and presentations (Hammergren and Simon 2009)

Data Access Layer

The Data Access layer of the data warehouse architecture acts as a link between the operational layer and the information access layer. This is performed by providing a connection between the two layers which uses a common language for interaction. This language is usually SQL or ASP. One of the major advantages that is gained through data warehousing is the provision of universal data access to end-users. This, in theory, also means that the end-users should be able to access data regardless of their location and the tools used. The Data Access layers facilitate this universal data access through creation of a link in a common language.
