Sample Essay

As counselors it is important to understand the working of the African American during the counseling session. It is advisable to understand what affects the response of African American families to counseling and facilitation. These can be seen in terms of the following dimensions; kinship bonds, educational orientation spirituality and racism (Sadeghi, Fischer and House, 2007).

The African American though may be from a single family, is surrounded by extended family network that provides them with emotional and economic support. They are also influenced by the strong kinship bonds that exist within their community. They adapt easily to roles, and have strong work and achievement ethics. Finally the community has strong religious orientation. The religious ties have a strong implication on the counseling session, as the African American will always relay on their spirituality. They also make reference to their spiritual beliefs (Hill, 2000).
