Isaac Asimov once said, “Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.” A man or a woman who resorts to violence as a solution has failed life. Abusing a child, a spouse or an elderly person is an act of cowardice that can have many repercussions. There are many types of domestic violence and forms of abuse that happen every day in every corner of the world.

A child is raped, a wife is beat up, a baby is killed, a grandfather is neglected and a man is denied his livelihood. Most forms of abuse have five characteristics: emotional, physical, sexual, economical and psychological. Each characteristic of abuse is as harmful as the other. Fortunately, some forms of abuse can be eradicated through corporation-consumer partnerships on a mission to instill corporate social responsibility. Although there is always hope any form of abuse leaves behind physical and emotional scars.

Domestic Violence

“Domestic abuse is alarmingly common — it knows not age, race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. It is defined as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain and/or maintain power over another partner.” (Turchetta & Duncan 82) Domestic abuse can be carried out through five actions. Physical abuse is one of the most common and well known forms of domestic violence but little do people know that denying the right to medical care is also recognized as physical abuse. Any harm to the physical well being of a partner is considered an act of domestic abuse. Sexual abuse is an extension of physical abuse where one person in the relationship forces him or herself upon the other sexually. Emotional abuse is more common because it is far easier to put someone down verbally and get away with it compared to physical abuse. Emotional abuse blurs the image of positive self esteem in the victim and can lead to depression. Economic abuse occurs when one person in the relationship withholds economic benefits from his/her partner to be in a powerful position. Psychological abuse occurs when a person inflicts fear in another person to get his/her own way, for example: blackmailing. (Turchetta & Duncan 82-83)
