Essay: For My Lover, Returning to His Wife

Sample Essay

In For My Lover, Returning to His Wife, Anne Sexton illustrates the family life where a man has a mistress. Though he may have good time with the mistress, he solely belongs to the wife.

The persona is a realistic woman. She knows that the man does not belong to her but to his wife and therefore says, “She was melted carefully down for you, and cast up from your childhood” (1-2). She also had a sense of inferiority complex. She thus describes the wife as, “as real as cast iron pot” (7) while referring to herself as, “littleneck clams out of season” (11). This shows that she ranks herself lower than the man’s wife. However, she is also abusive, where she refers to the man’s wife as, “throbbing angrily in the dirt, for the bitch in her” (26-27).
