Essay: Civic Activism in California
The State of California was the centerpiece of civic activism and anti slavery movements during the years from 1850 to 1865. The activism and the desire to finish off racial discrimination was a common feature of white and African American people.
African Americans assumed the leading role in California in trying to rid the nation of this notorious institution of slavery and brought to the forefront the issue of racial discrimination and racial inequality. The focal point of this widespread political activity was the city of San Francisco. Most of the African American there had come to the city in the days of the gold rush. During the initial decade, the population of African Americans grew very rapidly in the state which was evidence of the economic prosperity they enjoyed there. It could easily be surmised that racial discrimination was thus not as big a problem at that time. However things have changed over the years to some extent.
