Sample Essay

Banta’s work (1995) is also more reflective of the lives of the people that enter New York’s harbour, live and work in its ever-rising skyscrapers, and commute through its tortuous network of underground transportation.   It talks about the loss of individuality that they all will suffer from as they simultaneously travel across its topographical contours and socio-cultural planes.  Shear (1981), on the other hand, is more concerned with each subsequent Roman emperors relationship with Athens and what imprints they left on its architecture.

History, however, is a dominant factor in how both these writers approach the said cities.  It shapes their views, and informs their decisions.  However, even though it is a recurring theme, it does not unduly influence the perspective that each write has presented us with.  Furthermore, while Shear (1981) is concerned with the historical developments of that era taking place across Rome and Greece, Banta (1995) is more concerned with the human aspect of New York’s history, even complaining about the conspicuous absence of a feminine and minority perspective from the city’s predominantly male-centered narrative.
