Essay: Analysis of Song of Myself
Though the world seems to be evolving, the persona seems to be satisfied in his natural state. As thus, he says, “ I am satisfied, I see, dance, laugh, sing;” (40). He cherishes and values the connection between himself and nature. He also likens several aspects of nature to the human beings such as the curling grass transpired from the breasts of young men (89), the dark grass from the heads of old mothers (93) among others.
These f acts show the great connection that Whitman had with nature, and his belief that man is a natural being. However, with contemporary developments and man’s gradual shift to artificial things, Whitman would be grateful not to be living today to witness the tearing apart of a subject he held so dearly.
