The persona perceives the husband as an individual without choice, who has been bound by circumstance and no matter what; he has to go back to his family. This is despite the fact that his family doesn’t seem to offer him the much pleasure that he could find in her.

She notes of the way his family lived, “done this with her legs spread out in the terrible months in the chapel” (16-17). As for her, she awaits what the future has in store for her as she says, “I wash off” (43) meaning she just has to go on. This shows the persona really knew her place. She was a mistress and her time was up. She knew that the family is a respected entity and has to be maintained. This is why she just lets the man go. This is seen in her words, “I give you back your heart, I give you permission” (24-25).
